New Relationship Fund

Funding that supports First Nations, Métis communities and Aboriginal organizations:

  • build capacity
  • create jobs
  • develop business partnerships
  • improve economic opportunities

How it works

Two types of funding are available:

  1. core consultation capacity funding: helps First Nations and Métis communities consult and engage with governments and the private sector on land and resource matters
  2. enhanced capacity building funding: supports projects that build the capacity of First Nations, Métis communities and Aboriginal organizations to work with government and participate in economic development activities

Who is eligible

Core Consultation Capacity

You are eligible for funding if you are a:

  • First Nation community in Ontario
  • Métis community in Ontario
  • Political Territorial Organization, Tribal Council or Métis organization in Ontario applying on behalf, and with the support, of the communities you represent

You need to have a track record of representing your communities on local lands and resources issues.

Enhanced Capacity Building

You are eligible for funding if you are a:

  • First Nations community in Ontario
  • Métis community in Ontario
  • First Nations or Métis community or Aboriginal organization in Canada involved with the Ontario government on specific land or resource issues

Funding amounts

Core Consultation Capacity

Up to $90,000 a year for each represented community.

You can apply for multi-year funding.

Maximum amount (for applicants representing multiple communities): $2.2 million/year.

You do not need to re-apply if you received multi-year funding in 2014-15.

Enhanced Capacity Building

Single cap: $50,000 per project year.

Joint cap: 2 or more communities can make a joint application and apply for up to $50,000 per project year.

Application deadline

The 2015-16 deadline to submit an application is April 17, 2015.

How to apply

To apply for funding:

  1. Register with Grants Ontario.
  2. Complete your application on Grants Ontario

You will get a decision within 4 to 6 weeks of submitting an application.

Examples of past projects

Core Consultation Capacity

  • The Whitesand First Nation Project
    • helped create 17 new jobs
    • an example of developing green energy solutions that will boost the local economy (e.g., a biomass pellet plant in the community)
  • The Métis Nation of Ontario Project
    • hired 14 new staff and trained 300 Métis citizens
    • helped create the Lands, Resources and Consultations Branch, increasing Métis participation in areas related to land and resources, including, energy, mining and forestry

Enhanced Capacity Building

  • The Little Jackfish River Project
    • a partnership between Ontario Power Generation, Rocky Bay First Nation and 4 other area First Nations
    • will generate up to 73 megawatts of renewable hydroelectric power
  • The Lake Nipigon Project
    • a joint venture by four Lake Nipigon First Nations
    • will develop economic opportunities with mining companies in the region
