How do I get a refund for my driver's licence?

If you have moved out of the province, or have stopped driving in Ontario, you can request a refund for each unused 6-month part of your driver’s licence fee, your refund will be calculated from the date your driver's licence is returned and cancelled.

If you have moved to another part of Canada you must send a signed letter requesting a refund that includes:

  • your new mailing address
  • your Ontario driver's licence number, or your name and date of birth

You will also need to provide a copy of 1 of the following:

  1. Your new driver's licence issued by the new licensing authority where you live and must show the date of issue
  2. A confirmation letter from the new licensing authority where you live stating that you are now a licensed driver in that place and include the date that you surrendered your Ontario licence

If you have moved outside Canada, you must send a signed letter requesting a refund that includes:

  • your original Ontario driver's licence
  • your new mailing address
  • your Ontario driver's licence number, or your name and date of birth

You will also need to provide a copy of 1 of the following:

  1. your new driver's licence issued by the new licensing authority where you live and the copy must show the date of issue
  2. a confirmation letter from the new licensing authority where you live confirming that you are now a licensed driver in that place and state the date that you surrendered your Ontario licence

Refund for voluntary surrender

A driver can choose to voluntarily surrender a valid driver's licence, for reasons of moving, age or health. The driver is entitled to apply for a refund for each unexpired 6-month period remaining on the licence. The licence can be surrendered at a ServiceOntario centre or by sending a personally signed letter indicating their name and driving licence number to:

Refund for deceased person’s driver’s licence

To request a refund for a deceased person’s driver’s licence please bring the driver's licence and the death certificate or a notification of death from the police, judiciary or lawyer to any ServiceOntario centre. A funeral notice (obituary) from a newspaper or similar publication is not acceptable.

A refund for a deceased person’s driver's licence may also be requested by mail by sending the driver's licence and a copy of the death certificate or a notification of death from the police, judiciary or lawyer. Your letter must be mailed to:
