How do I get a refund for my driver's licence?

If you have moved out of the province, or have stopped driving in Ontario, you can request a refund on the unused part of your driver’s licence fee.

If you are requesting a refund because you moved out of the province, your refund will be calculated from the date your driver's licence is returned and cancelled.

To request a refund:

If you have moved to another part of Canada send a signed letter requesting a refund that includes:

  • your new mailing address
  • your Ontario driver's licence number, or your name and date of birth.
  • You will also need to provide a copy of one of these two documents:
  • Your new driver's licence issued by the new licensing authority where you live and must show the date of issue.
  • A confirmation letter from the new licensing authority where you live stating that you are now a licensed driver in that place and include the date that you surrendered your Ontario licence.

If you have moved outside Canada, you must send a signed letter requesting a refund that includes

  • Your original Ontario driver's licence.
  • Your new mailing address
  • Your Ontario driver's licence number, or your name and date of birth.
  • You will also need to provide a copy of one of these two documents:
    • Your new driver's licence issued by the new licensing authority where you live and the copy must show the date of issue.
    • A confirmation letter from the new licensing authority where you live confirming that you are now a licensed driver in that place and state the date that you surrendered your Ontario licence.

If you have stopped driving:

Your refund will be calculated from the date your driver's licence is returned to ServiceOntario and cancelled. To request your refund, please mail:

  • Your Ontario driver's licence.
  • A signed letter requesting the refund and confirming that you will no longer be driving.
