Renew a licence plate sticker
All motor vehicles in Ontario must display a valid licence plate sticker.
You can renew a licence plate sticker online from 180 days before the expiry date until 11:59 p.m. on the day the sticker expires. After a sticker expires, you need to renew it in-person at a ServiceOntario centre.

To renew your licence plate sticker, you need:
- your licence plate number

you may also need to provide your:
- vehicle inspection certificate number
- Drive Clean 6-character security code
- insurance company name
- insurance policy number
- odometer reading.
Save Your Receipt
Save and print or email your receipt at the end of your transaction.
This receipt will act as your proof of renewal until you receive a new sticker in the mail.

Any outstanding fines, non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees, and Highway 407 tolls related to your licence plate will be added to your online transaction total.

FAQs
What you need to know
You can renew a licence plate sticker online starting 180 days before it expires. You cannot renew it online after a sticker expires.
Licence plate stickers for dealers, farm vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles (over 3000 kg) can only be renewed at a ServiceOntario centre.
Proof of online renewal
If you renew within 9 days of expiry print your receipt and keep a copy in your vehicle to show proof you have renewed the sticker. This receipt is valid for 10 days after the expiry date.
If you sign up for renewal reminders your renewal receipt will be emailed to you.
Length of renewal
You can choose to renew for 1 or 2 years.
If you need a Drive Clean test in the next year, you can only renew for 1 year.
Lost renewal notice
You can check if your vehicle needs a Drive Clean test and renew online. You can also visit a ServiceOntario centre to request a reprint.
Removing an old licence plate sticker
Always keep your old licence plate sticker on the plate until you get your new sticker. Attach the new sticker as soon as you receive it.

Insurance Coverage
By law, to renew your licence plate, your vehicle must be insured. The Ministry of Transportation verifies that your vehicle is insured by checking your vehicle identification number (VIN), a unique number assigned to your vehicle, with insurance information supplied by your insurance provider to confirm valid insurance coverage, as required by law. If your insurance information cannot be verified, or there is a discrepancy with your vehicle registration number, you will not be able to proceed with your renewal.
