How do I renew my driver's licence, if I'm out of the province?
Before you travel:
If your licence will expire while you are travelling outside Ontario you can renew your licence at a ServiceOntario centre 180 days before the licence expires.
If you have a classified licence (A, B, C, D, E and F or Z endorsement) or require a written renewal visit a DriveTest centre.
If you are travelling:
If you are out of the province when your licence expires but will be returning within 6 months, you may be sent a one-time temporary driver's licence valid for up to a maximum of 6 months, so you can continue to drive while you are away.
Note: If you have a classified licence (A, B, C, D, E and F or Z endorsement) and require testing or your classified licence will be expiring while you are out of the province, you should contact ServiceOntario at 416-235-2999 (GTA) or toll free at 1-800-387-3445 (Canada wide) for more information.
Novice Licences: If you have a novice licence (G1, G2, or M2) and your driver's licence has expired you are unable to get a temporary licence mailed to you. You will have to visit a DriveTest centre to reapply when you return.
You will need to send a signed letter including:
- your driver's licence number or name and date of birth
- the length of time and reason for your absence
- an out-of-province mailing address
- telephone number and/or e-mail address
- a copy of your driver's licence photo-card
