Ebola Virus Disease

Ebola virus disease is a rare and severe viral disease. When infected, people can get very sick, with fever, intense weakness, headache, sore throat and pains, and in severe cases, may bleed from different parts of the body (i.e., hemorrhage).

The Ebola virus does not spread easily from person to person. It is spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, not through casual contact. Severely ill patients require intensive supportive care.

Ontario's Ebola Readiness

Although, the risk to Ontarians remains very low, we have steps in place to manage any potential threats.

Since the September 2022 Ebola outbreak in Uganda, Ontario has continued to work collaboratively with our federal and provincial health system partners to build on the collective readiness efforts with the release of the Public Health Management of Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers - Interim Guidance. This document supports public health units to manage individuals with a history of travel from countries affected by Ebola who may develop symptoms in Ontario.

It outlines various public health unit actions in risk assessment, reporting and partner collaboration as well as follow-up activities to manage exposed, symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, depending on level of risk and federal Quarantine Order requirements.
