Sault Ste. Marie

The Algonquian people called this place "Bawating" or "place of rapids" an apt name for this settlement alongside the St. Mary's River, between Lakes Superior and Huron. There is an American twin across the river, and twin canals connecting the lakes. The city's population is around 75,000.

Forestry, power generation, shipping and steel are the basis of industry in this city, which makes good use of its proximity to the raw materials. The Aviation and Forest Fire Management Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources is based in Sault Ste. Marie. The Ministry’s Aviation and Forest Fire Management (AFFM) program coordinates forest fire detection, monitoring, suppression and public information and education services for Ontario.

Sault Ste. Marie has historically been a gathering place and the community is made up of people from diverse backgrounds. Throughout the year many of the cultural groups represented in Sault Ste. Marie host celebrations showcasing traditional food, music and art.

While in Sault Ste. Marie, you can tour the canal locks or take the Algoma Central Railway's 500-kilometre (310 mile) tour to the awe-inspiring Agawa Canyon. Known to many as the "meeting place", the Roberta Bondar Park and Pavilion attracts visitors and residents annually through community special events and programming.
