Sault Ste. Marie

Sault Ste. MarieThe Algonquian people called this place "Bawating" or "place of rapids" an apt name for this settlement alongside the St. Mary's River, between Lakes Superior and Huron. There is an American twin across the river, and twin canals connecting the lakes.

Forestry, power generation, shipping and steel are the basis of industry in this city, which makes good use of its proximity to the raw materials. The Aviation and Forest Fire Management Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources is based in Sault Ste. Marie. The Branch maintains and operates one of the world's largest government fleets of forest-fire-fighting planes.

The city's population is around 75,000.

While in Sault Ste. Marie, you can tour the canal locks or take the Algoma Central Railway's 500-kilometre (310 mile) tour to the awe-inspiring Agawa Canyon.
