Canada's southernmost city, Windsor is located on the Detroit River in some of the richest farmlands in the country. The first European settlers on the Canadian side of the river were granted land in 1749 and, as railways and ferries came into service, local labour trends and the local economy became closely tied to industrial developments in the United States.
Wage and employment patterns here continue to be set by the auto industry, but have diversified with the arrival of the province's first casino in 1994.
The region is known for its superb birding activity. The Ojibway Park area attracts numerous species of birds, including very rare sightings. In winter, large numbers of waterfowl concentrate in the open waters of the Detroit River.
Population of the city proper is about 216,000; of the city and surrounding area: 323,000.
Some nearby communities include: Chatham, Leamington, Tecumseh, LaSalle, Wallaceburg and Amherstburg.
