Tips
Searching for business programs and services is not quite the same as searching for websites using Google, Yahoo!, or the Government of Ontario search engine.
Simple queries:
- Querying is not case sensitive. For example, government = Government.
- If you enter a single word, the query will search for an exact match, not a partial match. For example, fund will not return funding.
- If you enter a number of words or a phrase, the query will be treated as if the submission is enclosed in " " (double quotes). The only business programs and services returned will be for exact matches, including connecting words such as and, the, of, or, it, etc.
- When keywords or phrases are optional, separate each with a comma. This will return business programs and services with at least one of those words or phrases. A comma means the same as OR.
- Do not use ( ) (brackets).
Advanced queries:
- Use an * (asterisk) to indicate any number of letters and numbers. For example, submitting fund* will return descriptions containing fund, funds, funding, funded, etc.
- Use a ? (question mark) to represent one character only. For example, submitting sl?m will return slim, slam or slum.
- Use AND between keywords to search for returns that contain all of those keywords in any order. For example, if you enter funding AND agriculture (Note: spaces must be included), your query will return descriptions that contain both words in either order.
- Use NOT to exclude returns that contain a particular word. NOT can only be used along with AND and/or OR. For example, submit java AND programming NOT coffee.
- Using a – (dash or hyphen) immediately before a word means the same as NOT. For example, submitting program –north will return any business service standard that includes the word program but will exclude any return that also includes the word North. (A dash with space on either side will be treated like a comma.)
- Use <CASE> immediately before text that is case sensitive. For example, submitting <CASE>Jobs will return standards that only include text such as "Summer Jobs for Youth", and will exclude returns that only contain descriptions such as " ... ways to create jobs ..."
