Municipal Requirements

Mineral exploration and mine development activities may be subject to official plans and bylaws within municipalities or planning areas. Contact your local municipality for specific requirements.

Construction of buildings and other structures will require building permits, and may require compliance with the Ontario Building Code.

Mining proponents within a municipality need to ensure their property is properly zoned for mining. Changes in zoning require bylaw amendments which must be either be approved by municipal council or the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, depending on the municipality. The planning and review process is outlined in the Citizens Guides for Land-use Planning.

Any person or public body may appeal an official plan amendment to the Ontario Municipal Board.

Changes to official plans are subject to the Provincial Policy Statement (2005). Sections of this document that will affect a mineral project include the policy statements on mineral resources and human-made (mine) hazards.
