Non-Identifying Information (Birth Relative)
If you are a birth grandparent, adult sibling of a birth parent, or adult birth sibling of an adopted person, you can apply for non-identifying information at any time.
If your parent was adopted and is now deceased, you can apply for non-identifying information about your parent’s adoption at any time.
When you obtain non-identifying information it will provide you with information relating to the adoption that does not reveal the identity of anyone other than you. The information you receive will vary. It may include descriptions of birth relatives’ personalities, hobbies, talents, interests and physical appearances. Usually it will be provided in the form of copies of documents with identifying information removed. In some cases, you’ll get non-identifying information in summary format.
Where to get Non-Identifying Information
- If the adoption took place privately, read below for instructions on applying
- If the adoption was handled through a Children’s Aid Society, you must contact the Society that managed the adoption
- If you are not sure, send an application to us, and we will let you know if you should contact a Children’s Aid Society. Follow the instructions on applying

- The adoption must have been finalized in Ontario
- This is a free service

- Send your application by mail, registered mail or courier only
- We will send a letter of confirmation when we receive your application
