I am an Adoptive Parent (I Adopted a Child) - Severe Medical Searches

If the child you adopted has a severe mental or physical illness, you can apply for a Severe Medical Search on behalf of your child if your child is less than 18 years old.

This could help you give medical information to your adopted child’s birth relatives.  It could also help you get medical information from his or her birth relatives.

Restrictions

  • Severe Medical Searches have very strict criteria
  • Your doctor or health care professional must complete a section of the application form
  • It must be clear that your adopted child or your adopted child’s birth relatives will get a direct medical benefit from receiving this medical information. (A direct medical benefit means that the severe mental or physical illness will likely be easier to diagnose or treat)
