Overview

The Ministry of Education is committed to making Ontario's publicly funded education and child care systems the world's best, where all children and students have the opportunity to achieve success.

In the government's vision, educators, students, parents, teachers, principals, schools, boards, child care providers, service system managers, First Nations and the wider community work together in a genuine partnership to ensure good outcomes for all children.

Major Responsibilities

The ministry provides leadership and sets the direction for education policy in English and French-language elementary and secondary schools by:

  • Providing funding to school boards and school authorities;
  • Developing and providing supports for curriculum;
  • Establishing provincial standards for assessing student achievement;
  • Ensuring teaching excellence;
  • Setting policies and guidelines for school trustees, directors of education, principals and other school board officials;
  • Setting requirements for student diplomas and certificates;
  • Making regulations that govern the school year and holidays, the organization of schools and school boards, and the duties of teachers and school board officials;
  • Evaluating and approving textbooks and other learning materials for use in schools; and,
  • Operating provincial schools for deaf, blind and deaf-blind children, as well as demonstration schools for children with disabilities.

The ministry also provides leadership and sets the direction for licensed child care by:

  • Providing child care funding to Consolidated Municipal Service Managers (CMSMs), District Social Services Administration Boards (DSSABs) and First Nations;
  • Managing child care contracts with CMSMs, DSSABs and First Nations;
  • Setting legislative, regulatory and policy requirements for licensed child care providers that support the safety, health and well-being of children in licensed child care;
  • Licensing, inspecting and monitoring licensed child care providers to ensure compliance with provincial standards;
  • Investigating complaints regarding unlicensed child care providers; and,
  • Providing resources and supports for child care providers, educators and families
