Charred Tomato Pasta Salad

The sweet cherry or grape tomatoes balance the peppery bite of arugula in this warm pasta salad.

  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) extra virgin olive oil 
  • 2 tbsp (25 mL) balsamic vinegar                          
  • 1 clove garlic, minced  
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper                 


  • 8 oz (250 g) whole grain penne, rotini or fusilli pasta (about 3 cups/750 mL)
  • 4 cups (1 L) Ontario Cherry or Grape Tomatoes            
  • 6 cups (1.5 L)Ontario Baby Arugula or Spinach      
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) torn Ontario Basil Leaves
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) shredded or shaved Ontario Asiago Cheese


Dressing: In small bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper.  

Salad: In large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta until tender; drain well and place in large bowl. 

Meanwhile, toss tomatoes with 1 tbsp (15 mL) of the dressing. Place in grilling basket and grill over medium heat until tomatoes soften and lightly charred, 8 to 10 minutes. 

Add tomatoes to pasta, along with arugula, basil and remaining dressing; toss well. Sprinkle with cheese. Serve warm or at room temperature.
