How it works

If you’re an Ontario scientist, you can apply for funding for research projects with partners in China and Israel.

Ontario-China Research and Innovation Fund

The Ontario-China Research and Innovation Fund was created in partnership with the government of Ontario and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China to support research collaboration projects.

This year, Ontario and China are each investing $1 million to provide $2 million in overall funding.

Types of projects

To date, the fund has launched calls for proposals in the following areas:

  • water technologies
  • neuroscience
  • stem cells
  • hydrogen fuel cells
  • clean air technologies
  • medical devices
  • soil remediation

In 2016, the fund supports research in bio materials (e.g. natural fibre composites, bioplastics, biobased paints and coatings, and biological materials).

Funding amount

You can apply to receive up to $250,000 per project.

Who is eligible

You can apply if you work for a:

  • technology company
  • university
  • research institute at a hospital
  • research organizations

Project criteria

Your project should:

  • have a dedicated team that includes a lead China partner and at least one Ontario-based private-sector partner
  • focus on an area of strategic importance to both countries
  • demonstrate research excellence (e.g. have a strong research team, focus on developing leading edge technologies, etc.)
  • be able to develop new technologies for commercialization (e.g. high commercialization potential, addresses market demand, etc.)
  • have scientific and economic benefits for both Ontario and China

The Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) accepts applications on behalf of the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science.

Ontario-Jiangsu partnership

The Ontario-Jiangsu Industrial R&D Cooperation Program was created by the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science and the Jiangsu Science and Technology Departmentto support industrial research and development collaboration projects.

This year, Ontario and Jiangsu are each investing $0.6 million to provide $1.2 million in overall funding.

Types of projects

In 2016, this fund supports research in all technology sectors, from information communication technologies (ICT), life sciences, renewable energy and cleantech, to advanced manufacturing.

Funding amount

You can apply for up to $150,000 per project.

Who is eligible

Eligible applicants include Ontario:

  • technology companies
  • universities
  • hospital research institutes
  • research organizations

Ontario-Jiangsu project criteria

Your project should:

  • have a dedicated project team that includes a Jiangsu technology company and at least one Ontario-based organization
  • focus on an area of strategic importance to both countries
  • demonstrate innovation and high potential for commercialization
  • have social and economic benefits for both Ontario and China

Apply for Ontario-Jiangsu funding

The Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) accepts applications on behalf of the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science.

Ontario-Israel Collaboration Program

This fund supports research in:

  • bio-economy and clean technologies
  • advanced health technologies
  • pharmaceutical research and manufacturing
  • digital media and information and communication technologies

Funding amount

Up to 50% of total costs (maximum of $300,000).

Israeli partners are also eligible to receive funding through the Government of the State of Israel.

Who is eligible

To be eligible, your research project needs:

  • at least 1 industrial partner from Ontario
  • at least 1 industrial partner from Israel

Research projects

Projects should:

  • address a specific market need
  • demonstrate commercial relevance and potential
  • benefit both Ontario and Israel

How to apply

Submission period begins: May 10, 2015
Submission period ends: August 31, 2015

Application process

You need to apply through the Canada-Israel Industrial Research and Development Foundation, the organization that oversees the partnership and application process.
