Overview

The Ontario Agri-food Research Initiative (OAFRI) provides funding to advance key agri-food research and innovation projects for Ontario. The initiative was launched in 2019. Priorities and focus of the call for applications evolve over time. OAFRI is designed to deliver outcomes that will help achieve the ambitious goals set out for the Ontario agriculture and food sector in our Grow Ontario Strategy.

As of 2023, financial support for OAFRI is provided under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). Sustainable CAP is a $3.5 billion, five-year agreement (April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2028) between the federal, provincial and territorial governments. Summaries of each funded project are also available on the Ontario Agri-Food Research and Innovation Portal.

2023–2024 projects

The 2023–2024 call funded:

  • applied research projects to find new solutions and generate new knowledge
  • pilot and demonstration projects to develop and test new technology (products, practices, systems) prototypes
  • commercialization projects to scale up technology prototypes for use in real world or commercial environment
