Market Background:

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is the 12th largest global economy with a GDP of US$1.59 trillion, a population of 51.7 million, and a GDP per capita of US$30,644. It thrives in sectors like electronics, telecommunications, automotive production, chemicals, shipbuilding, and steelmaking, driven by major conglomerates such as Samsung, Hyundai, LG, SK, Lotte, POSCO, Hanwha, Hanjin, GS, and CJ, which account for 80% of the country's economy. The Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA) grants Canadian exporters preferential, tariff-free access to this significant market. South Korea is a key trade partner for Ontario and an increasing source of foreign direct investment (FDI). Recent major investments include a $5 billion EV battery manufacturing plant by LG Energy Solution and Stellantis, a new EV battery cathode materials production facility by Honda Motor Co. and POSCO Future M., and an e-compressor production plant in Woodbridge, Ontario, by Hanon Systems. In 2022, trade between Ontario and South Korea reached nearly $10 billion. South Korea ranked as Ontario’s #14 export and #6 import partner. Ontario's exports to South Korea, totaling C$923 million, include copper ores, soya beans, and optical instruments, while imports, valued at C$9 billion, consist of automotive, immunological products, and tractors. South Korean FDI in Ontario was valued at C$222 million in 2021, encompassing projects in the ICT and automotive sectors.
