SPECIAL CONSTABLE UNIFORMS

Special constable uniforms

1. (1) Any uniform worn by a special constable must comply with the following requirements:

1. It must be of a colour that is readily distinguishable from the colour of the uniform typically worn by police officers and First Nation Officers performing patrol functions in the area where the special constable normally performs their duties.

Note: On October 1, 2025, paragraph 1 of subsection 1 (1) of the Regulation is revoked and the following substituted: (See: O. Reg. 152/25, s. 1 (1))

1. The uniform, except for a stripe mentioned in paragraph 2, must be of a colour that is readily distinguishable from the colour of the uniform typically worn by police officers and First Nation Officers performing community patrol functions in the area where the special constable normally performs their duties.

2. Revoked: O. Reg. 152/25, s. 1 (2).

Note: On October 1, 2025, subsection 1 (1) of the Regulation is amended by adding the following paragraph: (See: O. Reg. 152/25, s. 1 (3))

2. If the uniform includes pants or shorts that have a stripe running along the length of the legs of the garment, the stripe must be the same colour for all special constables employed by the same employer and must be of a colour that is readily distinguishable from the colour of any stripe running along the length of the legs of the pants or shorts typically worn as part of uniforms for the following:

i. Police officers and First Nation Officers performing community patrol functions in the area where the special constable normally performs their duties.

ii. Members of the Ontario Provincial Police who are police officers, not including police officers who are appointed under the Interprovincial Policing Act, 2009.

3. The phrase “Special Constable”, “SPECIAL CONSTABLE”, “Constable spécial”, “Constable spéciale”, “CONSTABLE SPÉCIAL” or “CONSTABLE SPÉCIALE” must,

i. be clearly legible on any shoulder flashes, and

ii. appear prominently and be clearly legible on any part of the uniform worn on the upper body, including any patrol jacket. O. Reg. 86/24, s. 1 (1); O. Reg. 152/25, s. 1 (2).

(2) The phrase “Special Constable”, “SPECIAL CONSTABLE”, “Constable spécial”, “Constable spéciale”, “CONSTABLE SPÉCIAL” or “CONSTABLE SPÉCIALE” must appear prominently and be clearly legible on the front and back of any body armour worn by a special constable. O. Reg. 86/24, s. 1 (2).

(3) Subsections (1) and (2) do not apply to a special constable who is,

(a) employed by the Niagara Parks Commission; or

(b) employed by a special constable employer that employs police officers pursuant to the law of another jurisdiction. O. Reg. 86/24, s. 1 (3).
