Overview
As Ontario's only regional ministry, the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines (MNDM) promotes northern economic and community development. It coordinates the delivery of programs and services in Northern Ontario. As the ministry responsible for the provincial minerals sector, MNDM enhances mineral sector competitiveness and ensures the sustainable development of Ontario's mineral resources. The vision of the ministry is of a Northern Ontario economy and provincial minerals sector that are healthy, competitive and sustainable.
Major Responsibilities
- Advocating as the Ontario government's lead ministry in Northern Ontario; providing an effective voice for northerners in government.
- Fostering community and economic development in Northern Ontario in part through investments from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.
- Promoting trade and investment in Northern Ontario.
- Overseeing the annual Northern Highways Program.
- Administration of the Mining Act
- Delivering a wide range of geoscientific activities and services
- Marketing Ontario to international mining investors Delivering the Abandoned Mines Rehabilitation Program
