The Ministry of Transportation is committed to being a world leader in moving people and goods safely, efficiently and sustainably, to support a globally competitive economy and a high quality of life.
To accomplish this, the ministry seeks to:
- Increase transit ridership.
- Promote a multimodal transportation network to support the efficient movement of people and goods.
- Promote road safety in order to remain among the safest jurisdictions in North America.
- Improve Ontario’s highway bridge and border infrastructure.
- Integrate the principle of sustainability into the ministry’s decision making, programs, policies and operations.
Major Responsibilities
The Ministry of Transportation has direct responsibility for:
- Maintenance and strategic expansion of over 16,500 km, $57 billion provincial highway network and approximately 2750 bridges and structures.
- GO Transit/Metrolinx, which carries 57 million passengers annually.
- Legislation and regulations relating to road user safety, including vehicle licensing and registration.
- 29 remote airports and eight ferry services.
- Providing driving condition information to the public.
