Overview

It is important to maintain accurate information on your driver’s licence since the information is used to confirm your identity during traffic stops and when presented as an identity document to other institutions (e.g. bank, airport, etc.)

You will need to visit ServiceOntario to change your:

  • name
  • sex designation
  • date of birth
  • height

To change the personal information on your driver’s licence, you need to bring:

  • your current driver’s licence
  • original supporting documents (when required) listed below for each change or correction

Your new licence will arrive in the mail within 4 to 6 weeks. A new temporary driver licence or confirmation is issued at the ServiceOntario centre.

Note: When you receive your new driver’s licence, your previous driver’s licence will be voided. It is your responsibility to properly dispose your old card.

Change your address

You can change the address on your driver’s licence online.

Remove or add a vision condition or restriction

To remove a condition or restriction for glasses or contact lenses you must visit a DriveTest centre or ServiceOntario Bay and College (Toronto) and provide the following:

  • your current driver’s licence
  • a letter from an optometrist (if applicable)
  • take an eye test

To add a condition or restriction for glasses or contact lenses you must visit ServiceOntario in person and bring your current driver’s licence.

Name

You can now add French characters (e.g. ç, è, é, ê, ë) to your driver’s licence.

To change your name or add French characters (e.g. ç, è, é, ê, ë) on your driver’s licence, you need to bring proof of name/name change according to the list of accepted original documents.

Sex designation

Your driver’s licence can show 1 of 3 sex designations:

  • M (male)
  • F (female)
  • X (gender neutral)

Change from M to F or F to M

To change the sex designation on your driver’s licence from male (M) to female (F) or female (F) to male (M), go to a ServiceOntario centre near you and bring an original and valid document that indicates the updated sex designation, male (M) or female (F), from the list below:

  1. birth certificate
  2. birth certificate with parental information, or
  3. certified copy of birth registration

If you were born in Ontario, you can apply to change the sex designation on your Ontario birth registration and apply for a new birth certificate that reflects the change by sending an application to the Office of the Registrar General.

If you do not have one of the above, you will need to bring the following two documents:

  1. a letter from a doctor licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or a psychologist (or psychological associate) licensed by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. The letter must:
    • be on the doctor’s letterhead
    • state that the doctor has examined or treated you and the change in the sex designation on your driver’s licence is appropriate
    • be signed by the doctor
  2. a letter from you that includes:
    • the change you want to make
    • your full name
    • your current address
    • your driver’s licence number
    • the name and address of the doctor or psychologist (or psychological associate), who has signed the letter (described above) in support of the change

Change from F or M to X

To change the sex designation on your driver’s licence to an X, visit ServiceOntario. You do not have to bring any supporting documents.

Date of birth

To change or correct your date of birth you need to visit ServiceOntario and provide one of the following original documents:

  • birth certificate
  • certified copy of statement of live birth (government issued)
  • citizenship card
  • Canadian certificate of Indian status
  • permanent resident card
  • permanent resident form
  • record of landing

Height

Visit ServiceOntario to change or correct your height shown on the driver’s licence. You do not have to bring any supporting documents.
