Market Background: Japan has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, targeting a 46% reduction in its 1.15 billion tons of GHG emissions from 2020 by 2030, as outlined at COP26. To accelerate its climate change response, Japan is focusing on energy transition strategies such as ammonia (hydrogen), synthetic fuel, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Significant steps are needed to reduce thermal power generation and promote climate change initiatives. Exhibiting at World Smart Energy Week 2026 provides a valuable platform for Ontario companies to lead in the global energy transition, particularly in Japan and Asia. The show covers hydrogen, solar, wind, batteries, smart grids, biomass, and decarbonization technologies, making it ideal for Ontario companies with cross-sector solutions or those looking to expand into new markets. Exhibitors will engage in B2B meetings, forge partnerships, and explore joint ventures with international players, positioning Ontario as an innovator in sustainability and carbon neutrality, especially in light of Japan’s strong push toward net-zero by 2050. South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is the 12th largest global economy with a GDP of US$1.59 trillion, a population of 51.7 million, and a GDP per capita of US$30,644. It thrives in sectors like electronics, telecommunications, automotive production, chemicals, shipbuilding, and steelmaking, driven by major conglomerates such as Samsung, Hyundai, LG, SK, Lotte, POSCO, Hanwha, Hanjin, GS, and CJ, which account for 80% of the country's economy. The Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA) grants Canadian exporters preferential, tariff-free access to this significant market. South Korea is a key trade partner for Ontario and an increasing source of foreign direct investment. Korea is actively shifting its energy mix from coal and LNG and commits to Net Zero by 2050. South Korea was one of the first East Asian nations to implement a national emissions trading scheme (K-ETS) with climate commitments to COP26 to reduce emissions by 40% from 2018 levels by 2030.
