- True double elimination system
- A true double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament’s championship upon having lost two games or matches.
- Basic structure
- All participants start in the Winners Bracket
- When a participant loses once, they move to the Losers Bracket
- If a participant loses again (in the Losers Bracket), they are eliminated
- The tournament continues until there is one player left in each bracket (Winner of the Winners Bracket and Winner of the Losers Bracket)
- Finals
- The Losers Bracket winner must beat the Winners Bracket winner twice to claim the championship
- The Winners Bracket winner only needs to win once in the final
- Pool system
- Categories with six or seven Competitors
- Preliminaries consist of pools of three or four competitors as necessary
- Two competitors are selected from each pool
- Competition is by direct elimination after the pools
- Determination of a winner in a pool is made on the following basis: the highest total number of wins determines the winner
- Winner of pool A fights the second place of pool B and the winner of pool B fights the second place of pool A
- Winners of these bouts meet to determine the gold and silver medals and losers are awarded bronze medals
- Categories with three to five competitors
- The competition consists of one pool of three, four or five competitors as necessary
- Categories with two competitors
- In weight categories with two competitors, the competitors fight twice. In case of a tie in victories, a third fight is held
- Tie breaking criteria
- The tied competitors compete again, round robin style in a pool of three
- In case the tie persists, the weight of the competitors recorded during official weigh-in determines their placing. The lightest places first, second lightest places second, etc.
- Categories with six or seven Competitors
