Pathways to Safety strategy

Through the Pathways to Safety strategy, Ontario is partnering with Indigenous communities and partners to build safer communities where Indigenous women, children and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people live free from violence, racism and exploitation.

Our strategy focuses on structural changes across six key areas of action:

  • The pathway to safety and security: investing in resources and programs that promote safety, healing and wellness for Indigenous women and girls.
  • The pathway to justice: collaborating with Indigenous communities to transform the justice, policing and child welfare systems.
  • The pathway to health: improving access, promoting safety and increasing culturally grounded services across Ontario.
  • The pathway to culture: focusing on Indigenous-led approaches to education, training, employment and language revitalization.
  • The pathway to addressing anti-Indigenous racism: developing an Indigenous-led approach to strengthen safety and security.
  • The pathway to responsibility and accountability: collaborating with Indigenous partners to strengthen accountability and deliver positive outcomes.

The strategy was created in close partnership with Indigenous partners and community members in response to the Calls for Justice from the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
