Overview

The Welcoming English language learners into French as a Second Language Programs (2016) resource guides educators to support students who are English language learners in FSL programs. It highlights the benefits of FSL education for these students, including:

  • improved language skills
  • cognitive growth
  • cultural awareness

The resource also has information about:

  • strategies for supporting students who are English language learners in FSL programs
  • research combating myths that FSL is too hard for English language learners and showing that they can succeed
  • programs available to help English language learners develop the literacy skills they need to continue their education

An English language learner is a student who is learning the kind of English used in publicly funded schools. These students may:

  • be Canadian born or new to Canada
  • come from diverse backgrounds and school experiences
  • have a wide variety of strengths and needs
  • need focused educational supports to become proficient in English
