How it works

Through the Communities in Transition program, the government helps communities and industries facing economic challenges such as:

  • plant closures
  • job losses
  • industry-wide restructuring

Our staff work one-on-one with community representatives to develop proposals that address specific challenges and opportunities.

Funding amount

Maximum funding

Up to $1 million a year.

Who is eligible

You are eligible if you are a:

  • municipal government
  • economic development organization
  • professional/business association working with sectors/industries in transition
  • regional or professional association focused on economic development

For-profit businesses are not eligible for funding.

Eligible projects

The program funds innovative projects that are not covered under other provincial programs. It is flexible and tailored to individual communities and industries.

Past projects

  • Windsor Essex Economic Development Corporation: a project that developed business retention and attraction activities with food processors and the supply chain related to the closure of the HJ Heinz Leamington facility.
  • Canadian Tooling and Machining Association: a program that helped the tooling and machining sector become more competitive by providing advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing software training to its members.

How to apply

Interested applicants need to communicate with a representative to discuss eligibility of their organization and project.

If you are invited to submit a proposal, complete the proposal package which can be found by logging on to Grants Ontario.

Deadline

There is no application deadline. The program is continuous intake.
