Overview

The Ministry of Consumer Services helps Ontarians as they go about their day-to-day lives.

Whether they’re making the biggest purchase of a lifetime, such as buying a home or a car… signing a contract to renovate the kitchen or join a gym… plugging in an electric kettle or firing up a propane barbeque… we help consumers make smart, safe choices.

Major Responsibilities

We help consumers directly, and through the work of our Administrative Authorities and agencies. Within our broad mandate, we:

  • inform people about their consumer rights and responsibilities
  • protect Ontarians from unfair business practices
  • promote public safety standards.

We help people resolve consumer issues by investigating complaints, mediating disputes and enforcing consumer protection laws.

We develop laws, regulations and policies that build on our mandate to inform and protect consumers, and support public safety standards.

Our Administrative Authorities regulate the sale of motor vehicles, travel services, real estate and funeral services; administer new-home warranties and support Ontario wineries. Two Authorities regulate electrical safety and technical safety. The Ontario Film Review Board is the provincial Crown Agency responsible for classifying movies, videos and DVDs for content and age appropriateness. The Office of the Athletics Commissioner oversees the province’s regulation of professional combative sports including boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts.
