Approval of the North Renfrew Landfill Environmental Assessment
The ministry’s approval of the environmental assessment for a new landfill site serving the Town of Deep River, the Village of Chalk River, and the United Townships of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay.
Notice of approval
Proponent: North Renfrew Waste Management Board
Environmental assessment file number: MU-0842(2)
Take notice that the period for requiring a hearing, provided for in the Notice of Acceptance of the Environmental Assessment for the undertaking, expired on November 15, 1997. I received no submissions.
Having considered the purpose of the Act and the Environmental Assessment of the undertaking as accepted, I determine that a hearing is unnecessary and I hereby give approval to proceed with the undertaking subject to the terms and conditions set out in Attachment A. Since the proponent submitted its environmental assessment prior to the proclamation of the Environmental Assessment and Consultation Improvement Act on January 1, 1997, this application has been approved under the provisions of Part II of the Environmental Assessment Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. E-18.
Reasons
My reasons for determining that a hearing is unnecessary and for giving approval are:
- The Ministry of the Environment’s Technical Review Team is not opposed to approval befng issued for the construction and operation of the North Renfrew Landfill Site.
- with the exception of the Algonquins of Golden Lake First Nation, no other federal, provincial or local government agency is opposed to the proposed landfill site.
- No upper or lower tier municipal government is opposed to the proposed landfill site.
- On the basis of the proponent’s Environmental Assessment, the Review and the conditions of approval, the construction, operation and maintenance of the undertaking will be consistent with the purpose of the Act (section 2).
- Members of the Site Liaison Committee, who are involved in the design of the landfill site, are not opposed to the proposed landfill site.
