Meet the Shuhs

Shuh Orchards, located near Elmira, is a fourth-generation family farm committed to growing delicious, fresh, Ontario apples.

In 2013, Robert and Lisa Shuh shifted from dairy and poultry farming to apple growing, planting their first 50 acres with 62,000 trees. In 2020, they introduced a roadside fruit stand, which quickly gained popularity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on that success, they launched a pick-your-own apple experience in 2023—an idea from their eldest son, Tim.

Today, the entire Shuh family—Robert, Lisa, and their four children—work together to manage the orchard, ensuring their apples are enjoyed by the community.

A tip to enjoy Ontario Apples

Robert Shuh shared two personal favourites. During harvest, he loves driving the tractor down the rows of apple trees, reaching out to grab an apple and chomping on it right then and there—no need to stop! But for the rest of the year, Robert enjoys picking a bin of "seconds" apples, which he then turns into applesauce. He jokes that he eats applesauce nearly every day of the year—he estimates it’s 330 days out of the year, minus the days when he’s out of the country and can’t bring it with him. It’s safe to say applesauce is a staple in his home.

Ontario Apple varieties grown at Shuh Orchards

Shuh Orchards grows a variety of apples, including Gala and Honeycrisp, which are customer favourites. Lisa's favourite, Ambrosia, is ready at the end of the season and would be the third-place winner.

The importance of supporting local

For Robert and Lisa, supporting local is important for freshness and reducing the carbon footprint. At Shuh Orchards, apples are picked daily for the stand, and with the "pick-your-own" option, you can’t get any fresher than that.
