What is it?

Dot voting is when participants vote on their preferred ideas using a limited number of stickers or pen marks — dot stickers being the most common. Limiting the number of votes can help you weigh your priorities and also prevent team members from over-voting on one idea.

You may use different colors to represent different purposes depending on how you want to structure the session. For example, you may use purple dots for “Like” and red stickers for “Dislike”, or blue for “Design team input” and yellow for “Developer team input.”

Purpose of dot voting

Dot voting is mainly used for prioritizing ideas on prototypes, concepts, or ideas. Dot voting is beneficial to the team because it:

  • is cost-effective
  • saves time rather than going through a list one at a time
  • allows for equal participation
  • holds everyone accountable for prioritizing key issues
  • helps the team understand how final decisions are being made
