Overview

An uncertified vehicle record may be requested by your vehicle insurance company or employer. Depending on the type of vehicle record you order, it may contain:

  • Vehicle description
  • Plate number of current plate attached to the specified vehicle and all other previously attached plates
  • Date(s) the vehicle was registered to each registrant
  • Vehicle status

Vehicle records do not contain information about current odometer readings, collision information, driver’s licence numbers, owner names or personal address information.

Before you order, make sure that an uncertified vehicle record is what you need for your purpose. Check with the individual requesting the record to confirm which version you will need before you order.

There are different types of uncertified vehicle records available online, you can:

Search using licence plate number

  1. for a specific date range
  2. current owner information
  3. for complete history

Search using vehicle identification number (VIN)

  1. for a specific date range
  2. current owner information
  3. for complete history

Documents you need to get an uncertified vehicle record

To order an uncertified vehicle record you will need 1 of the following:

  • your Ontario driver’s licence number
  • registrant identification number (RIN), or
  • your name and address

Depending on the type of record you may also need:

  • vehicle identification number and search date, or
  • licence plate number and search date

Order an uncertified vehicle record

Uncertified vehicle records can ordered online, in person at a ServiceOntario centre or by mail. A certified driver record contains the same information as the uncertified record but the official Ministry of Transportation seal is stamped into the paper rather than onto it using ink. (This is called embossing).

Vehicle Confirmation Letter

If specific information in a vehicle record is required and a vehicle record search will not provide the required information, you may request a vehicle confirmation letter. You are required to send a signed letter that includes the vehicle identification number or plate number and the type of information that is required. Confirmation letters cost $6 each. Certified letter is $12.

The fee, in the form of a cheque or money order, must be included and made payable to the "Minister of Finance/MTO" and drawn on a Canadian bank account. If you wish to use VISA or Mastercard, you will need to complete a Credit Card Authorization Form.

We require a signed and dated letter of authorization that includes the following information:

  • name of card holder
  • card type (Visa or Mastercard)
    • Please note that as of January 16, 2017, we no longer accept payments by American Express.
  • card number
  • expiry date (month and year)
  • reason for request
  • amount to be charged
