Look for the Foodland Ontario logo when you shop

In Ontario and Canada, there are many different labelling requirements that businesses must follow that can also help consumers to determine where a product is made and its origins.

Definitions at-a-glance:

  • Product of Ontario means the primary ingredients are grown or raised right here in Ontario by our farmers and producers.
  • Made in Ontario means the product was crafted in the province. Some ingredients may come from outside of Ontario.
  • Product of Canada means all or most ingredients are sourced within Canada and manufactured in the country.
  • Made in Canada means the last substantial transformation of the product occurred in Canada.

Visit the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s website for more information about how to identify Canadian food.

Why you should buy local

It supports our communities

Choosing fresh and delicious local food helps create jobs and supports our economic growth in Ontario. It also builds a strong sense of community by supporting Ontario’s farmers, their families and local businesses. You make a positive impact every time you choose to buy local.

It helps the environment

Ontario farmers take pride in being good stewards of the land, helping to promote sustainability and preserve it for future generations. Buying local also means your food comes from closer to home, reducing the environmental impact of imported food from outside the province. Remember that closer means fresher!

It’s nutritious and tastes great

Knowing exactly where your food comes from lets you make sure you’re getting the best quality ingredients for your next meal. Adding nutritious Ontario foods, fruits and vegetables to your diet can help contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
