Background

The Ontario Food Terminal (OFT) is the largest wholesale fruit and produce distribution center in Canada. It was established in 1954 to provide a convenient, efficient and low cost receiving and shipping facility for wholesalers of fruit and produce, and now serves all of Eastern Canada and some of the Northern States.

The OFT is located on 40 acres of land in Toronto. The land is owned and operated by the Ontario Food Terminal Board (OFTB). OFTB consist of up to seven-members which includes a Chair and a Vice Chair. Under the authority of the Ontario Food Terminal Act, the OFTB's mandate is to acquire, construct, equip and operate a wholesale fruit and produce market and to operate such facilities for the transportation and handling of fruit and produce as may be necessary for the purposes of the Terminal.
