Overview

The Ontario government is providing a $200 taxpayer rebate in 2025 to offer immediate relief for Ontario families in the face of high interest rates and the federal carbon tax.

This $200 taxpayer rebate is being sent to all eligible adults in Ontario who filed their 2023 Income Tax and Benefit Return by December 31, 2024. Eligible families will receive an additional $200 for each child under 18 if they have already applied for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). For example, a family of 5 with 2 adults and 3 children will receive $1,000, if eligible.

Rebates are being paid by cheque only and started to be mailed out as of early 2025.

Scam alert

The Government of Ontario will only contact you directly in response to a question or query about the rebate you initiated.

It will not proactively contact you by text, email, or phone to:

  • ask for personal information (for example, Social Insurance Number (SIN), bank account information, health information)
  • offer you money or a reward
  • sign you up for a rebate program

Who is eligible

The taxpayer rebate will be paid to eligible Ontario adult tax filers and for each child under age 18.

Adults

A $200 taxpayer rebate will be made to eligible Ontario tax filers who meet all the following requirements:

  • 18 years or older at the end of 2023
  • resident in Ontario on December 31, 2023 and still living in the province
  • filed their 2023 Income Tax and Benefit Returns by December 31, 2024
  • not bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024.

Children

You will receive the $200 taxpayer rebate for each child under age 18 if they are enrolled in the federal Canada Child Benefit (CCB) program.

Families who have never applied for the CCB for one or more of their children now have until March 31, 2025 to apply and be eligible for a $200 taxpayer rebate for each of their eligible children.

Apply for Canada Child Benefit

In most situations, the rebate payment will be made to the resident of Ontario who receives the  CCB for the child. If you have a shared custody arrangement, payments will be split based on the most recent CCB information available.

If you did not qualify for a CCB payment for 2024 but had previously applied (and are otherwise eligible) you do not need to re-apply.

When the rebate will be sent

Cheques are being mailed as of early 2025.

Sample rebate calculations

Example 1

Martha and Sheelah filed their 2023 Income Tax and Benefit Returns in spring 2024. They have 3 children under the age of 18 and receive the CCB for each of them.

Martha and Sheelah will each be eligible to receive a payment of $200. Martha, who receives the CCB, will qualify for a second payment of $600 for their children. The family will receive cheques totalling $1,000.

Example 2

Doug and Deamon are separated and have shared custody of an 8-year-old child. Both of them have filed their 2023 Tax and Benefit Returns on time, and each receive a share of the CCB.

Doug and Deamon will each receive a $200 taxpayer rebate. The $200 payment for their child will be split in two, with Doug and Deamon each receiving an additional $100. This means Doug and Deamon will each receive taxpayer rebate cheques totaling $300.

Example 3

Sherri and Connor applied for the CCB when their son was born in 2017. They received the CCB for the first few years, until their income grew and they no longer received a CCB payment. When their daughter was born in 2020, they did not apply for the CCB for her.

Sherri and Connor would receive a $200 taxpayer rebate automatically for their son. However, they also have to apply for the CCB before March 31, 2025, to receive a $200 rebate for their daughter.

The family of four would then get the total taxpayer rebate of $800 — $200 for each adult and $200 for each child.

For delivery address changes, Ontarians can also call ServiceOntario at 1-833-351-0409 or TTY: 1-888-821-9056. Once the delivery address has been updated, a cheque will be sent to the new address. Any previously mailed cheques will be cancelled.
