Section 23 of the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005 makes it a condition of registration that a career college only offer vocational programs for which it has the Superintendent's approval.

Section 53 (1) (c) of the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005 authorizes the Superintendent of Career Colleges to issue policy directives exempting career colleges, or any class of them, from the requirement that they obtain approval for a specified class of vocational programs under section 23 of the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005.

This is a legal document and is binding on all career colleges. Every career college shall comply with and be operated in accordance with this policy directive.

Definitions

Band
has the same meaning as in the Indian Act (Canada)
Council of the Band
has the same meaning as in the Indian Act (Canada)
Education authority
has the same meaning as in the Education Act (Ontario)
Ontario College of Teachers
means the College established under the Ontario College of Teachers Act, 1996

Exemption

Pursuant to the authority outlined above, entities are exempt from the requirement to obtain the approval of the Superintendent to offer the following programs:

Programs accredited pursuant to O. Regulation 347/02 made under the Ontario College of Teachers Act, 1996 and described in O. Regulation 176/10 Part III.

A program leading to a:

  1. part 1 principal's qualification
  2. part 2 principal's qualification
  3. supervisory officer's qualification (SOQP)

This exemption applies if the programs are offered exclusively to:

  • members of the Ontario College of Teachers
  • students who are not members of the Ontario College of Teachers but who have prior experience as a teacher, principal or education leader in a school or school board located outside the province of Ontario that receives regular and ongoing operational funding from the province in which it is located
  • students who are not members of the Ontario College of Teachers but who have previously been employed or otherwise engaged as a teacher, principal or education leader by a band, a council of the band, or education authority authorized by the Crown in right of Canada to provide education for First Nation pupils

Policy directive not applicable to other programs

This policy directive does not affect the requirements set out in the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005 for a vocational program in any other field, whether either or not linked to the programs indicated above.
