Serving documents on the Crown in a civil case
Learn how to provide documents by email or in person in a civil case involving the government.
Overview
In a civil case in an Ontario court involving the provincial government, you might need to serve or provide certain documents to the:
- Crown in right of Ontario (Ontario government)
- Attorney General of Ontario
- Children’s Lawyer
- Public Guardian and Trustee
You can serve these documents either in person or using email.
You should understand the specific rules for serving legal documents in civil court proceedings, including in small claims court.
Do not send documents to the email addresses below if your case has already started. For a case that has already started, serve documents on the lawyer assigned to the case, in accordance with the applicable rules.
Required information for email service
Unless otherwise specified by the rules, emails should be less than 10MB and must include:
- sender’s name, address, telephone number and email address
- date and time of transmission
- a name and telephone number of the person to contact in the event of a transmission problem
