Environmental assessment
Notre Development Corporation submitted an environmental assessment on December 16, 1996 and sought approval to landfill the Adams Mine. On April 28, 1997, an addendum to the environmental assessment was received which clarified that approval was being sought to landfill the South Pit of the mine only. Should the proponent wish to develop any of the other pits on the Adams Mine site for landfilling purposes, all appropriate environmental approvals would have to be acquired at that time.
The landfill site is located approximately 10 km southeast of Kirkland Lake, in the northwest quadrant of the Unorganized Township of Boston, District of Timiskaming. It is proposed that the site receive a maximum of 20 million tonnes of non-hazardous solid waste from Ontario over a 20 year period.
The notice of completion of review was issued on July 9, 1997, with the public comment period ending on August 8, 1997. The Minister of the Environment referred the matter to a focused hearing before the EA Board on December 16, 1997. The project was approved on August 13, 1998.
Designation
On June 6, 1997, the Minister, with the concurrence of Cabinet, designated by Ontario Regulation 221/97 the proposed Adams Mine Landfill project. The site is located in the unorganized Township of Boston, southwest of the Town of Kirkland Lake.
