Points-based moose tag allocation process

The points-based tag allocation process allows hunters to apply for a moose tag in a primary allocation stage and a second chance allocation stage.

Ontario residents may apply for:

  • calf tag - valid only for the harvest of a calf moose
  • cow/calf tag - valid for the harvest of either a cow or a calf moose
  • bull tag - valid only for the harvest of a bull moose

A calf tag will be valid for the full length of all moose hunting seasons in a specific Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) (such as for both the bows only and gun seasons). Bull and cow/calf tags will be WMU and season-specific.

As of 2021, calf tags are no longer issued with a moose licence.

Note: Applying to the moose tag allocation process does not permit you to hunt moose. All moose hunters must have a moose licence and hold a valid tag or be party hunting with a tag holder.

Eligibility

You can apply to the moose tag allocation process if you:

  • are an Ontario resident
  • have hunter accreditation on file
  • have a valid Outdoors Card
  • are at least 15 years old

You are not allowed to apply to the moose tag allocation process if you are:

  • An apprentice hunter (12-14 year-old resident hunter).
  • A non-resident of Ontario. Non-residents can only acquire their own tag to hunt moose by purchasing a hunt from a tourist outfitter.

If you are an Ontario resident, you can also acquire a tag or party hunt on a tag as a registered guest of a tourist outfitter.

Fees

Application, licence and tag fees are:

  • tag allocation process application fee: $15.00 (paid once to apply to one or both stages)
  • resident moose licence: $35.29
  • calf tag: $30.00
  • cow/calf tag: $150.00
  • bull tag: $200.00

Moose tag quotas

Moose tag quotas and hunt codes will be available beginning April 1:

Tag quotas will no longer be published in the Hunting Regulations Summary.

Starting June 15, you can find out the number of remaining tags available for the second chance allocation stage online or by phone at 1-800-288-1155.

How to apply

All hunters will apply to the tag allocation process as individuals. There are no group applications. You can apply to the moose tag allocation process:

  • online
  • phone
  • in person

You can apply to the:

  • primary allocation stage from April 1 to April 30, 2025
  • second chance allocation stage from June 15 to July 7, 2025

Apply online

To apply online, you need to create an online account with the Fish and Wildlife Licensing Service. Once your account is set up, you can apply to the tag allocation process when it opens.

You will need a credit card to pay the application fee.

To set up an online account, you will need your:

  • Outdoors Card number
  • date of birth
  • postal code

To access an online account that you already have, you will need the following:

  • Outdoors Card number or account email address
  • password

Apply by phone

  1. Learn the hunt codes that correspond to your choices of tag type. Hunt codes will be available on April 1.
  2. Call the automated phone line at 1-800-288-1155.
  3. Apply to the moose tag allocation process and pay the application fee.
  4. Record the authorization number you receive at the end of the call.

Apply in person

  1. Visit a licence issuer or participating ServiceOntario location.
  2. Check your receipt before leaving the counter to verify your choices are entered correctly.

Get allocation results

Allocation results will be available after each stage of the allocation process. Results will be available:

  • on May 16 for the primary allocation stage
  • beginning August 1 for the second chance allocation stage

Claim and print your moose tag

As of 2021, you must claim a tag you have been awarded before the applicable tag claim deadline for the tag to be issued to you and be available for printing.

Claim your moose tag

Between May 16 and June 9, you must claim a tag awarded in the primary allocation stage for it to be issued to you. Unclaimed tags will be made available for other hunters to apply for in the second chance allocation stage.

Tags awarded in the second chance allocation may be claimed between August 1 and the end of the relevant season.

If you will be hunting on private land in WMU 65, you need to complete the landowner consent form and get the signature of the landowner. You need to carry the signed form with you while hunting.
