Overview

Every year, the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development reaches out to employers, workers and other stakeholders through our Safe At Work Ontario consultation sessions.

The consultations help us gather information for strategic planning processes, specifically associated with proactive inspections carried out by inspectors.

This year, we asked questions about:

  • hazards
  • health and safety initiatives
  • education, outreach and awareness
  • sector specific topics

About the consultations

The ministry held 10 web and in-person consultation sessions throughout October 2019.

In a short online survey, we asked for your input on which occupational health and safety topics we should focus on for our April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 initiatives.

We also received written feedback through our online consultation paper.

Participants

Stakeholders were invited to participate in the consultation sessions through:

  • an email from the ministry
  • the ministry’s What’s New newsletter
  • health and safety associations
  • stakeholder meetings
  • our online consultation paper

We encouraged people from all sectors to participate in our consultation sessions to discuss:

  • top 10 violations - hazards in the workplace and identifying their top concerns
  • compliance strategies, how they are working and what we can improve
  • education, outreach and awareness and how the ministry and its health and safety partners can better inform and support workplace parties
  • sector specific issues for industrial, construction, health care and mining

What we heard

Over 100 stakeholders provided feedback through our online and in-person sessions.

Several written submissions were sent to us through the consultation paper, and over 50 individuals completed the online survey.

We thank everyone who participated in this year’s consultations. We’ve received valuable feedback that will help shape our strategies for 2020 to 2021, and beyond.
