Get, renew or replace a garage licence
How to get a class A or C garage licence if you have a business that buys and sells trailers or if you wreck or dismantle vehicles.
Overview
Licence types
You can apply for 1 of 2 types of garage licences:
- Class A: if you sell trailers only
- Class C: if you buy vehicles to wreck and dismantle, but not for resale
You don’t need a garage licence
You do not need a garage licence if you:
- have a Motor Vehicle Dealer’s Licence (OMVIC Certificate) issued by the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC)
- do not sell motor vehicles, but sell:
- farm tractors
- self-propelled machinery primarily intended for farming or construction
- motor-assisted bicycles
- off-road vehicles
- motorized snow vehicles
Renew your garage licence
You will need to renew your garage licence every year starting on November 1.
If you did not renew your licence for the previous year, you will need to pay the fee for both the previous year and the current year. If you have not renewed your licence for 2 or more years, you will need to apply for a new garage licence.
To renew your licence, you:
- do not need a letter from the city
- need to send in your completed renewal application form found on your current garage licence by mail or in person

- cheque or money order made payable to the “Minister of Finance”
- credit card (a Payment Authorization Form must be completed)

Get a garage licence for the first time
To apply for a first time class A or C garage licence, you need:
- to complete the Application for Garage Licence form
- a letter from the city stating that the proposed location of your business does not violate any municipal bylaws (for class C licence only)
- send your completed application, payment and required documents by mail or in person

How to replace a garage licence
To replace your garage licence, you need to:
- ask for a replacement through the office that issued your original garage licence
- complete the Application for Garage Licence form

If you sell or move a business
If you sell or move your business, you need to return your garage licence to the ministry.
You will need to apply for a new licence to ensure that the new location does not violate any municipal bylaws.

Garage register
If you operate a garage you must maintain a record of all used motor vehicles/trailers bought, sold or wrecked. These records must be kept for at least 2 years at your business location.
