Protocol for analyzing wastewater samples
Information on quality assurance and quality control for labs doing sample analysis for Ontario’s wastewater surveillance initiative.
Overview
The Protocol for Evaluations of RT-qPCR Performance Characteristics was developed as part of Ontario’s COVID‑19 Wastewater Surveillance Initiative.
The protocol provides academic, research and government lab scientists, and commercial labs with technical guidance on quality assurance and quality control when analyzing wastewater monitoring samples for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
As of September 1, 2021, labs in the Wastewater Surveillance Initiative that receive funding through government Transfer Payment Agreements must adhere to this protocol.
The protocol helps ensure these labs are generating high-quality and accurate wastewater surveillance data. This data can be used to support public health decision making, such as where and how to mobilize resources in response to potential COVID‑19 outbreaks.
The protocol also provides information to a broader audience of laboratory scientists, including scientists who analyze biological samples in water, air and soil.
