Purpose of the Study
The Township, the Proponent for the undertaking, intends to proceed with the preparation of an Individual Environmental Assessment, in accordance with the EAA to assess waste management needs of the Rawdon community and solutions over the next 25 years. The Rawdon Landfill is currently the sole disposal for solid waste material generated within Concessions 6 to 14 of the former Township of Rawdon and has been in operation since 1963. Through recent volume estimates, it has been predicted that maximum capacity will be reached in approximately three or four years. As a result, waste management solutions are required from the Township of Stirling-Rawdon.
The proposed Terms of Reference sets out how the Township is proposing to assess the proposed alternatives and the preferred undertaking for their potential effects on the natural, socio-economic, and socio-cultural environments that might reasonably be expected to be affected. The Township has identified the following alternatives to be considered during the environmental assessment (EA) process:
- Do nothing
- Waste diversion
- Create additional disposal capacity
- Combination of alternatives
The proposed alternatives will be finalized and a preferred undertaking will be determined during the Environmental Assessment process through public, First Nations and agency consultation following the requirements of the EAA.
