L’indice de ruralité de l’Ontario (IRO) est une mesure de la ruralité qui assure que le financement est ciblé spécifiquement pour les collectivités du Nord et très rurales. L’indice de base IRO 2008 est dérivé de trois facteurs :
- la population (nombre et densité)
- le temps de déplacement vers un centre spécialisé de base
- le temps de déplacement vers un centre spécialisé avancé
Des indices IRO sont attribués aux subdivisions de recensement (SDR) de Statistique Canada.
