Overview

You may need to order a 5-year, extended or complete driving record, letter or document if you have been asked for:

  • more detailed information
  • information that covers a longer time period
  • legal reasons

Most of the time you will need one of the common driving records and not longer-term records or driver letters or documents.

Before you order

Choose the appropriate product before you order.

Records, letters and documents may be uncertified or certified. Uncertified meets most people’s needs. Certified has a seal from the Ministry of Transportation and is typically required for legal reasons only.

You can choose to order:

  • online (for the 5-year driver record and driver documents only)
  • in person
  • by mail

Payment and delivery times vary and depend on how you choose to order.

Driver identification details

The 5-year, extended and complete driver records include:

  • name (as it appears on the driver’s licence)
  • driver’s licence number
  • date of birth
  • sex
  • height
  • class, for example G or M
  • expiry date
  • status, for example, licensed, unlicensed, suspended
  • earliest licence date available
  • conditions and endorsements, for example, requirement to wear glasses or contact lenses to drive, ability to drive a vehicle with air-breaks

Some driver confirmation letters may also include certain driver identification details.

Order a 5-year driver record

Includes:

  • driver identification details
  • demerit point total
  • convictions, suspensions and reinstatements under the Highway Traffic Act for the past 3 years and under the Criminal Code of Canada for the past 5 years

Does not include:

  • driver’s address
  • driver’s education courses

Cost

  • an uncertified record for $12 (most common)
  • a certified record for $18

Online

Order:

Be ready to:

  • enter your driver’s licence number
  • enter the reason for your request
  • pay with a valid Visa, Mastercard or debit cards

Update your address before you order to have it sent to the address we have on file.

To send an uncertified or certified record by mail to a different address, you can request it online or order by mail.

Delivery

  • Your order for an uncertified or certified record (with a seal) will be processed within 15 business days and then sent by regular mail via Canada Post. Records will be sent to the Ontario residential address we have on file.
  • No digital versions will be provided.

Order a complete driver record

Includes:

  • driver identification details
  • demerit point total
  • all convictions, suspensions and reinstatements under the Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code of Canada for as far back as available
  • all collisions
  • all residential addresses recorded on the record
  • driver’s licence replacements, renewals, class changes and any other changes

Cost

  • an uncertified record for $48 (most common)
  • a certified record for $54

Order a driver confirmation letter

If you need specific information that is not available in a driver record, you may choose to order a driver confirmation letter. This is not a driver record.

For example, a driver confirmation letter may be needed if you are applying to drive in another province, territory or country.

  • a certified letter for $12

  • your name
  • driver’s licence number or date of birth if number is not available
  • an explanation of the type of information required
  • your email and phone number

Order copies of driver documents

If you need scanned copies of your original driver documents, you can order these through the Ministry of Transportation. These are not driver records.

These may include copies of your original:

  • driver’s licence application
  • driver’s licence replacement application
  • driver’s licence renewal applications (prior to April 2005)
  • conviction reports, suspension notices, etc.

Cost

  • an uncertified document for $6 (most common)
  • a certified document for $12

Online

Order:

Be ready to:

  • enter your driver’s licence number
  • enter the type of document being requested and the approximate search date
  • enter the reason for your request
  • pay with a valid Visa, Mastercard or debit cards

Your privacy

To protect a driver’s privacy, most products do not include a driver’s residential address.

A driver can order any longer-term record, letter or document for themselves. Review the information that is or is not included in the product and choose one that meets your needs.

Other requesters such as lawyers or law enforcement representatives can also order driver products, for example:

  • 5-year driver record (lawyers or a Canadian law enforcement agency)
  • extended driver record (Canadian law enforcement agency or the Crown Attorney’s office)
  • complete driver record (Crown Attorney’s office)
