Background
Historical studies completed by the Township of Pickle Lake and inspections conducted by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) have identified concerns regarding the operation of and decreasing capacity at the current municipal landfill site. The Township intends to proceed with the preparation of an EA in accordance with the EAA to determine a long-term solution for the Township’s waste management needs. The first step in the EA process is the preparation and approval of the ToR.
Concerns relating to the Township’s landfill site include the decreasing capacity as well as historical landfilling operations that have occurred beyond the current allowable limits. The undertaking will address household domestic waste, industrial demolition waste, septic sludge, pallets, wood, rubble and concrete.
Study Area
The Study Area outlined in the ToR includes the Township’s municipal boundaries (service population of approximately 400) as well as wastes from the residents and businesses of Mishkeegogamang First Nation (approximately 900 on-reserve residents), two camping facilities located on Lake St. Joseph (approximately 400 seasonal residents) and four campgrounds located north of the Pickle Lake Townsite. The Minister approved the ToR on March 24, 2010.
