Persons who operate the following types of drinking water systems must be a “Trained Person”:

  • small non-municipal non-residential system serving a designated facility
  • small municipal non-residential system serving a designated facility
  • non-municipal seasonal residential system serving a designated facility

How to get your "Trained Person" designation for the first time

Complete the Operation of Small Systems for Trained Persons (Ontario Regulation 170/03) coursefootnote 1. This course is available through the Walkerton Clean Water Centre — Toll-free: 1-866-515-0550. By completing this course, you have successfully obtained your Trained Person designation, as defined under Ontario Regulation 170/03 of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Your designation is valid for 3 years. Keep your course certificate for verification purposes.

How to maintain your "Trained Person" designation

  1. To maintain your designation, within 3 years of completing the Operation of Small Drinking Water Systems course, complete one of the Director approved courses for Trained Persons listed below:
    • Operation of Small Systems for Trained Persons (Ontario Regulation 170/03) course (online), offered by the Walkerton Clean Water Centre
    • Small System Fundamentals (classroom), offered by the Walkerton Clean Water Centre
    • Best Practices for Small Systems (classroom), offered by the Walkerton Clean Water Centre
    • Small Systems Hands-on Workshop (classroom), offered by the Walkerton Clean Water Centre
    • Small Water System Operation and Maintenance (onlinefootnote 2 or correspondence), offered by Sacramento State Water Programs
  2. Your course completion date marks the start of the 3-year period for which your designation is valid. Ensure you complete one of the courses listed above every 3 years. You may retake the Operation of Small Drinking Water Systems course to meet this requirement.
  3. Keep proof of all training you complete for verification purposes.
