Executive summary

This fact sheet provides decision-making tools to help farm managers and custom farm work operators manage the use of equipment and work time to meet production and profit goals.

It will help you decide whether it makes sense to:

  • own or lease (long term) equipment
  • hire custom farm work
  • rent equipment (short term)

Custom farm work is when a farmer hires others to complete machinery operations instead of owning the equipment and completing the operations themselves.
