Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for Medical Education

About the grant

Starting in Fall 2026, the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for Medical Education will provide funding to future physicians who agree to work as a family doctor any where in Ontario for at least five years upon graduation.

The grant retroactively covers the direct educational costs of your undergraduate medical education for students currently in postgraduate family medicine residency programs, including:

• tuition
• compulsory fees
• books
• other direct education costs (for example, supplies and equipment)

Eligibility

The grant is only available to Ontario residents currently in postgraduate family medicine residency programs at Ontario medical schools. Once a student is enrolled in a family medicine residency program, they can apply to the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for Medical Education program to retroactively have their undergraduate medical education covered.

It does not extend to:

• other medical specialties
• residents who attended out-of-province medical schools
• current undergraduate medical students

To be eligible for the grant, you must:

• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person
• be an Ontario resident
• have lived in Ontario for 12 consecutive months without being in full-time postsecondary studies
• have completed an undergraduate degree at an Ontario medical school
• be currently enrolled in a postgraduate family medicine residency program at an Ontario medical school
• commit to practising comprehensive primary care as a family medicine physician anywhere in Ontario for 5 years

• NOSM University
• Queen’s University
• Toronto Metropolitan University
• University of Ottawa
• University of Toronto
• Western University

Where you can work after residency

Service commitment

To receive the grant, you must commit to practising comprehensive primary care as a family doctor anywhere in Ontario for 5 years.

To meet your service commitment, you must practise as a family doctor under one of the following approved comprehensive primary care models, in accordance with a signed agreement with the Ministry of Health or Ontario Health:

• Comprehensive Care Model
• Family Health Network
• Family Health Group
• Family Health Organization
• Blended Salary Model as part of a Family Health Team
• Rural and Northern Group Physician Agreement
• Rural Generalist Model

You may also work for an eligible employer that delivers comprehensive primary care services, such as:

• Community Health Centre
• Indigenous Primary Health Care Organization
• Sioux Lookout Physician Services Inc
• Group Health Centre
• Weeneebayko Area Health Authority

If you do not fulfill your service commitment, the grant will be converted into a repayable loan.

Only applicants currently in the first year of a postgraduate family medicine residency program at an Ontario medical school are eligible.

More information about future application cycles will be available before applications open for each academic year.

The Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for Medical Education is administered through OSAP. You must use an OSAP account to apply for the grant.
