Executive summary
This report provides an overview of progress made on the implementation of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit education policy framework between 2007 and 2013. It includes baseline data on First Nation, Métis and Inuit student achievement based on voluntary, confidential Indigenous student self-identification and highlights key priorities for the ministry, successes to date, plus next steps for advancing the goals of Ontario’s Indigenous Education Strategy.
The First Nation, Métis and Inuit education policy framework (PDF) was released in 2007 and outlined the government's approach to supporting First Nation, Métis and Inuit learners in Ontario. The framework identified two primary challenges to be addressed by 2016:
- to improve achievement among First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students
- to close the achievement gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students
The framework included the ministry's commitment to providing progress reports every three years based on ten performance measures.
