After you apply

After the application deadline closes, there are several steps in the recruitment process for employment standards officers. At each step in the process, we will notify you whether you have passed that step or not. Please note that there may be changes to the steps and timelines during the recruitment process. Applicants will be notified of any changes.

The entire recruitment process may take up to three months to complete.

Step 1: Screening

We review and screen application forms that are correctly completed and submitted before the deadline. We select applicants for the next phase of the recruitment process whose experience, skills, knowledge and abilities best meet the job qualifications and requirements.

Step 2: Behavioural assessment and interview

If successful in the screening process, applicants will be assessed and interviewed regarding the core competencies of the role. The interview is scheduled for up to 60 minutes and focuses on personal suitability for the job. We will ask you questions that require you to provide examples from your work experience.

Step 3: Technical assessment and interview

There are two parts to the technical stage which will assess your knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • oral interview asking questions about your knowledge, skills and technical abilities (scheduled for up to one hour)
  • final written assignment (scheduled for up to one hour)

Step 4: Reference check

We will provide you with a reference check consent form to complete and return at the technical interview stage. You must provide references from current and past employment.

Step 5: Employee corporate file reviews (OPS employees only)

If you are successful and an OPS employee, we will complete an employee corporate file review.

Step 6: Enhanced security screening check

In accordance with the Ontario Public Service Employment screening checks policy, the top candidates must undergo an enhanced security screening check. This includes a:

  • criminal record check
  • driver records check (at time of hire)

The recruitment unit will assist in this process.

How we evaluate the screening check results

If you have a record under the Criminal Code, or other federal offence records, it does not mean you are automatically ineligible for the position. We will only review and evaluate the screening checks to make a security clearance decision. We will consider the details of your screening checks in specific relation to the duties and responsibilities of the position you applied for. We will maintain screening check records and keep them strictly confidential.

If you are successful

If you are a successful candidate, we will contact you with a verbal offer of employment. If you accept, we will send you an appointment letter that will include information, such as:

  • your start date
  • position classification
  • starting salary

Job offers are conditional on a successful enhanced security screening check.

The salary for this position is identified in the job ad and is part of a collective agreement. All successful candidates who do not currently work in the Ontario Public Service will be hired at the start of the salary range. All successful candidates who are currently working in the Ontario Public Service will be hired according to collective agreement policy.

New hires undergo a mandatory and intensive 4 to 5 month training program that includes both virtual and in person training. This training may also require travel.

Successful candidates who do not currently work in the Ontario Public Service will enter a mandatory 9-month probationary period starting at date of hire.
