Overview

To operate in Ontario, all farm machinery dealers and distributors must register with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA) in accordance with the Farm Implements Act, 1990.

The act establishes and enforces safety standards and regulations to:

  • improve machinery safety
  • reduce farm fatalities and injuries

Definitions

A dealer is a person who, in the ordinary course of business, offers farm machinery or parts for sale at retail.

A distributor is a person or manufacturer who, in the ordinary course of business, sells, consigns or delivers farm machinery or parts to a dealer.

A dealer/distributor is a distributor who also offers farm machinery or parts for sale at retail.
